The Art of Posing

6 tipsFree Access

Master the subtle art of movement and stillness. From editorial to commercial, learn how to communicate emotion through your body with grace and intention. These aren't rigid rules — they're invitations to discover your most photogenic self.

1

The Softening

Free
Before every shot, take a breath and consciously soften. Drop your shoulders away from your ears. Unclench your jaw. Let your fingers relax. The camera captures tension before it captures beauty. Softness is your secret weapon. Practice in front of a mirror: tense everything, then release. Notice the difference. That released state is where your best photos live.
2

Eyes That Tell Stories

Free
Your eyes are your most powerful tool. Practice 'smizing' — but beyond that, practice thinking of specific emotions while shooting. Think of the last time someone you love made you laugh. Think of rain on a window. Think of the woman you're becoming. Each thought creates a different light in your eyes.
3

The S-Curve

The S-curve isn't about exaggeration. It's about creating gentle flow through your body. Shift your weight to one hip, angle your shoulders slightly opposite to your hips, and let one hand rest naturally. Think of how water flows — nothing forced, everything graceful.
4

Hand Placement That Feels Natural

Hands are the hardest part. The rule: never let them go flat or rigid. Gently curve your fingers as if you're holding a delicate flower. Place them on your face, in your hair, on your hip — but always with intention. Dead hands kill a beautiful pose.
5

Movement Between Poses

The transition between poses is where magic happens. Don't snap from pose to pose. Flow. Let your body find the next position through gentle movement. Many photographers shoot between poses because that's where the most natural, authentic moments live.

Working with Wind & Fabric

Flowing fabric and wind are your best friends on set. Learn to anticipate the breeze, turn into it slightly, and let the fabric do the storytelling. Practice walking in flowing dresses at home. The more natural it feels, the more effortless it looks.
